Here are some animals you might see during a hike in Trentino.

The Adamello Brenta Natural Parkis the largest protected area in Trentino. Just think, it covers a whopping 620 square kilometres! Established in 1967, it is crossed by the Val Rendena, famous for its breathtaking landscapes, and is surrounded by our beloved Giudicarie, the Val di Non and the Val di Sole.

Lovers of a mountain holiday in Trentinoare left speechless every time by its unspoilt landscapes, the vibrant colours of the forests covering the mountains and the alpine meadows above 2,000 metres. Its vast, magnificent and imposing forests are made up of firs, beeches and larches, which often give way to flowery meadows, true multi-coloured quilts.

Let's discover a little more together about this fairytale place and the different animal species that live there and that you too might encounter during a hike in the Adamello Brenta Natural Park.

A leap into a magical world.

The Park’s territory, in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers truly unforgettable experiences. From dawn, when the first rays of light break through the peaks, to dusk, when the sun’s red glow stretches across the majestic summits, nature reveals breathtaking, unforgettable sights. Trails wind past torrents, streams, lakes, and waterfalls, crossing what can truly be described as a fairytale world.

Feeling at one with unspoiled nature.

Walking through dense woods, breathing the purest air and seeking out hidden cornerswhile admiring the beauty that this rich environment offers are some of the activities that lead people to constantly seek contact with the earth.

But this is not the only connection you can make with the land of the Adamello Brenta Natural Park. With a little patience and a touch of luck, you may come across some unusual travel companions along the way: the true locals—the animals!

Mind the antlers.

As you cross the Park, be prepared for some wonderful surprises. There are so many panoramic viewpoints that we recommend always carrying binoculars so you can admire every tiny detail.

During a stop in the Caret area, where numerous trails lead into the Val Genova, take in the wonderful peaks surrounding you and keep your eyes on the summits. That is where you can see the chamois of the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, the acrobats that are repopulating the entire area thanks to a reintroduction project. Continuing along the waterfall trail, you may then come across the king of the forest, the majestic red deer with its long, intertwined antlers, or the smaller roe deer.

The most adventurous may even reach the foot of the Lobbie Glacier, the largest in the Italian Alps, where, by keeping a sharp eye out, you are likely to spot chamois kids playing together.

The brown bear, the park's symbol animal.

Many species of wild animals live in the Park, but the one that is talked about most of all is the brown bear. Thanks to the 1996 Life Ursus project, the presence of the Brenta brown bear has gradually increased.

It usually wanders undisturbed and keeps its distance from inhabited areas, but what should you do if you were to spot one? Although peaceful by nature, it could react unexpectedly if caught by surprise. So remember to walk noisily, treading on the leaves to alert it to your presence. If you happen to encounter it, do not run away or start running: it will most likely continue on its way, giving you a wonderful experience.

Among the many carnivores present is also thefox, which comes out in the evening and can be recognized from a distance by the tawny color of its fur, but also the stoat and the polecat.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

If you hear a light rustling among the tree branches while walking along a path, pay attention: your traveling companion could be a rodent. We are talking about the squirrel, whose cheerful presence is always a pleasant discovery.

Equally common is the marmot. It lives at altitudes above 1,800 meters and you can recognize it by its typical high-pitched whistle that announces its presence. It loves the sun and likes to stay in groups, so try not to make noise, and you will surely manage to photograph it!

Red crests or wide wings?

Among the inhabitants of this rich wildlife, you will also find the tetraonids. No, they are not superheroes, they are the capercaillie, the black grouse and the white partridge. You will easily recognize them by their red crest or the stunning iridescence of their feathers.

Looking up, search for the queen of the skies, the golden eagle. Together with falcons, buzzards and kestrelsthey make up the family of birds of prey. If instead you feel like going on a fascinating night hike in the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, it will not be difficult to spot owls and great owls. The latter will certainly make their presence known!
