Scientific Research

Where water meets science

our research

Over 90 scientific publications, a measurable commitment

At the Comano Spa, research is an integral part of the treatment and represents its operational prerequisite. Each therapeutic path originates from clinical observations, is deepened through structured studies, and progressively validated over time. The adopted protocols are not static: they are updated based on collected data and the evolution of scientific knowledge. This model integrates clinical observation, data analysis, and therapeutic application within a continuous care context.

The G.B. Mattei Institute

Founded in 2014 with the aim of developing new therapeutic applications and validating thermal spa treatment protocols, the G.B. Mattei Institute is the scientific center that makes Comano the leading Italian spa center for investments in dermatological research. Over €750,000 invested, more than 90 scientific publications, 60,000 patients treated in the last 5 years: these figures translate the mission of making spa medicine a rigorously evidence-based discipline into concrete facts.

Scientific collaborations

Comano's research is based on a network of excellent partners. With CIBIO of the University of Trento, and specifically with the teams of Professors Nicola Segata and Olivier Jousson, a study on the microbiome of thermal water was conducted and published in Microbiome, a leading international journal: 250 bacterial species characterized, about 40% of which were previously unknown to science. With the University of Pavia, the collaboration strengthens the clinical profile in the dermatological field.

Areas of research

Three main research areas guide the research: thermal dermatology, with studies on psoriasis and atopic dermatitis that led to Comano's inclusion in national guidelines for dermatitis treatment; skin and gut microbiome, to understand the immunomodulatory mechanisms of the water; and hydrotherapy, to evaluate whether the intake of thermal water acts on comorbidities associated with psoriasis such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

care and research

From research to treatment

Research findings are progressively translated into therapeutic protocols used in spa treatments. This allows us to offer treatments that are:

  • structured according to clinical criteria
  • monitored over time
  • consistent with available evidence

The integration of research and practice allows for a high level of control over therapeutic pathways and enables their adaptation based on collected data.
